Q&A: Mayapple Salon & Boutique

Owner Melissa Arens pictured 3rd from left.

The next shop to take on our list of Q&A's is Mayapple Salon & Boutique. Today we learn more about owner Melissa Arens and how she and her team combine a popular salon with a great vintage boutique.

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF. WHO IS THE TALENT BEHIND MAYAPPLE SALON & BOUTIQUE?
My name is Melissa Arens and I'm the owner at Mayapple Salon & Boutique which was founded in November of 2008. I've also been a licensed hairstylist and makeup artist for over 10 years, as well as the fashion director for Art Amiss for about five years now. Art Amiss––a local nonprofit that throws art related events in the community and who's profits go back into the local arts––and Mayapple often overlap when it comes to doing runway shows and/or editorial hair, makeup, and fashion styling. Mayapple's driving force would have to be it's inner ability to express yourself through art (hair, makeup, and fashion styling) as well as the beauty of a co-op ran business.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A SHOP OWNER IN FAYETTEVILLE?
I feel like even though I do so much to keep my business running, I could not do it without the help of my staff and the community around us that believe in Mayapple. I also love watching individuals grow personally and career-wise while working with us as the salon and boutique.

HOW DO YOU COMBINE YOUR SALON & BOUTIQUE?
I have always enjoyed styling girls and doing hair & makeup for the art of photo-shooting! I started the expansion of Mayapple Boutique in April of 2011 after throwing runway shows for Art Amiss for several years and signing on to do work with Northwest Arkansas Fashion Week 2012. I felt it was time to have more clothes available for the runway shows, and to fill my addiction and passion for editorial styling!

WHAT ERA OF VINTAGE BEST DESCRIBES MAYAPPLE?
Mayapple has ALWAYS been and will always be a combination of some wholesale modern pieces and well-picked thrifted items of all decades. We also carry local designers items and items from local designers in other cities.

WHAT HAIR STYLE AND MAKEUP TRENDS CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE THIS FALL?
There are lots of fun fall styles to showcase in Retro on the Runway. We're most excited about mixing all the decades and throwing all the rules our the window!
